Laser beam welding setup for the coaxial combination of two laser beams to vary the intensity distribution

Abstract Deep-penetration laser beam welding is highly dynamic and affected by many parameters. Several investigations using differently sized spots, spot-in-spot systems, multi-focus optics show that the intensity distribution one of most influential parameters; however, targeted lateral axial design remains a major challenge. Therefore, processing optic has been developed coaxially combines two separate sources/beams with different characteristics measuring for optical coherence tomography (OCT). In comparison to current commercial this setup not only makes it possible independently vary powers beams but also their focal planes, thus facilitating investigation into influence specific energy densities along axis. First weld penetration depth increases increasing intensities in deeper positions until reduced at sample surface, due deep position, no longer sufficient form stable keyhole, causing drop sharply.
